{"id":306,"date":"2011-01-06T10:27:32","date_gmt":"2011-01-06T15:27:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tmurgent.com\/TmBlog\/?p=306"},"modified":"2013-04-06T11:54:47","modified_gmt":"2013-04-06T15:54:47","slug":"update-regarding-app-v-and-windows-branch-cache","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tmurgent.com\/TmBlog\/?p=306","title":{"rendered":"Update Regarding App-V and Windows Branch Cache"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last February, when App-V 4.6 was released I blogged about the new features (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmurgent.com\/TmBlog\/?p=151\">https:\/\/www.tmurgent.com\/TmBlog\/?p=151<\/a> ).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It turns out that that, due to incorrect information supplied, there was an\u00a0mistake in that post that has some people scratching their heads in how to make it work.<\/p>\n<p>The error is about enabling BranchCache at a remote site\u00a0with App-V Clients.\u00a0 Microsoft previously indicated that changes were made to the 4.6 client to enable it to utilize BranchCache.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, BranchCache does not recognize the RTSP or RTSPS protocols and will provide no value to App-V clients at the remote site for RTSP\/S communication.\u00a0 Branch cache does provide help for Windows 7\u00a0machines using\u00a0SMB and HTTP\/S protocols.<\/p>\n<p>A remote App-V client can communicate using all three methods, depending upon configuration.\u00a0 While RTSP\/S is the most popular, it isn&#8217;t the only method.\u00a0 Companies using RTSP\/S at a remote site have many options to reduce bandwidth consumption and the effect of latency.\u00a0 These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An App-V\u00a0Streaming Server at the remote site, using an ASR override at the client with RTSP:\/\/StreamingServer syntax.<\/li>\n<li>Just using the App-V Server at the central site and adding ASR override at the client with FILE:\/\/ContentServer syntax pointed at the central site.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Just using the App-V Server at the central site and adding ASR override at the client with FILE:\/\/ContentServer syntax pointed at the\u00a0remote site.\u00a0 You need to copy (use RoboCopy) the files any time there is a change.<\/li>\n<li>Same as above, but with a remote site DFS share.\u00a0 This can be done with or without an ASR override with FILE:\/\/dfsname syntax, depending on whether main site clients will receive the apps using RTSP or with FILE: syntax.<\/li>\n<li>A central site HTTP or HTTPS server.\u00a0 The App-V client either uses the HTTP\/S server as a publishing server, or continues to the the RTSP\/S central site for publishing and uses a client ASR override with HTTP: \/\/IISServer syntax.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Leveraging a SMS\/SCCM Distribution point located at the remote site.\u00a0 This can be done with App-V clients configured to use SCCM (thus elliminating RTSP altogether), or tricking SCCM to deploy the package to the DP and manipulating the App-V client.\u00a0 The latter is not recommended, but has been done.<\/li>\n<li>My favorite method &#8211; use the StandAlone Client.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It seems BranchCache should help with Scenarios #2 and #5.\u00a0 I hope this helps to clarify this a little.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last February, when App-V 4.6 was released I blogged about the new features (see https:\/\/www.tmurgent.com\/TmBlog\/?p=151 ).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It turns out that that, due to incorrect information supplied, there was an\u00a0mistake in that post that has some people scratching their heads in how to make it work.
