TMEdit  The Ultimate App-V Package Editor

Menu: Extensions: Shell Extensions

This menu page shows all of the Shell Extensions in the package. Shell Extensions plug into the Windows Explorer.  There are many types of shell extensions, some officially supported by App-V and others that probably work anyway.  The type of each is shown.

Shell extensions cause Windows Explorer to become virtualized via Dynamic Virtualization whenever the explorer process loads these COM based dlls.  Often, this happens when the user right-clicks in a Windows Explorer process or on the Desktop.  This locks every package with shell extensions until the explorer process is closed (which is only when the user logs off in the case of the Desktop).

Thus in situations such as published apps, it makes sense to disable the Shell Extensions. You can do this here on a per-package basis, but disabling them all via GPO on those client systems might be better.
